The Polyscias fruticosa 'Hawaiiana Ming', also known as Fine-leaf Aralia, is a sculpted tropical plant native to the Pacific Islands and Southeast Asia. Its ultra-fine foliage finely cut into tender green feathery fronds creates a fascinating graphic silhouette — light, airy, almost like botanical lace supported by thin, branched stems. A very distinctive aesthetic compared to all other tropical houseplants.

Its sculptural silhouette makes it one of the most sought-after Aralias among collectors of graphic plants, one of the most distinctive Polyscias in the catalog.

Which Polyscias variety to choose?

The Polyscias genus offers several very distinct silhouettes and textures — here are the most distinctive profiles in the catalog:

  • Polyscias 'Hawaiiana Ming' (this plant) — ultra-fine foliage in feathery fronds, airy graphic silhouette, 3 sizes from 45 to 90 cm. The most sculptural and distinctive in the range.
  • Polyscias fruticosa — broader cut green foliage, denser bushy habit. The choice for a less airy and more voluminous cut-leaf Aralia.
  • Polyscias Fabian — round burgundy-purple leaves, compact and bushy habit. The choice for a bold and very decorative color.
  • Polyscias balfouriana — round variegated green and cream leaves, airy and light habit. The choice for a bright and light palette.
  • Polyscias Roble — deep green rounded leaves, miniature zen tree habit. The choice for a very structured minimalist and calming style.

Light & placement

Polyscias Ming thrives in bright indirect light — this is essential to maintain the density of its fine fronds and the vibrancy of its tender green. It tolerates some gentle morning or late afternoon sun, but like all indoor Polyscias, it is very sensitive to sudden light changes.

  • Light: bright indirect to soft direct light — tolerates morning or evening sun, not harsh midday sun.
  • Placement: bright living room, office near a window, entryway — anywhere with steady, stable light.
  • Absolutely avoid: drafts, sudden temperature changes, and frequent moves — Ming quickly drops leaves if disturbed.
  • Temperature: 18 to 24 °C, stable.
  • Humidity: 50 to 70% — mist 1 to 2 times per week.

Place the Polyscias Ming in its final spot upon arrival — it is the most sensitive tropical houseplant to relocation, and each position change almost always triggers temporary leaf drop.

Watering & care

Polyscias Ming prefers a slightly moist surface substrate without ever staying soggy — a slight lack of water is always better than excess, as with all indoor Polyscias and Aralia.

  • Frequency: once a week in spring and summer — let the surface dry slightly between waterings.
  • In autumn-winter: gradually reduce watering according to light and ambient temperature.
  • Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes and well-draining substrate.
  • Humidity: mist 1 to 2 times per week — fine fronds dry quickly at the tips in dry air.
  • Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants diluted by half, once a month from April to September.

If leaf tips brown, increase misting frequency and use filtered or rainwater — lime quickly marks the ultra-fine fronds of Ming, much more visibly than on thick leaves.

Decor ideas & plant pairings

The sculptural silhouette and ultra-fine foliage of Polyscias Ming make it a uniquely contrasting plant — its feathery, light fronds create a strong visual dialogue with broad, massive foliage in any ambitious tropical arrangement.

  • For maximum texture contrast, pair Polyscias Ming with a Monstera deliciosa — the ultra-fine feathery fronds of Ming contrast spectacularly with the large cut leaves of Monstera for a duo of very opposite but complementary plant graphics.
  • For a tall graphic plant composition, pair Ming (90 cm size) with a Ficus lyrata — the lace-like silhouette of Polyscias in the foreground and the large violin-shaped leaves of Ficus in the background create two very contrasting lightness registers within the same green palette.
  • For an XXL tropical composition with three height levels, place Ming in the middle between a Calathea Orbifolia on the floor and a Areca Palm above — the fine fronds of Ming create the ideal visual transition between the large striped leaves of Calathea and the arched palm fronds.
  • In a matte white or very light gray ceramic decorative pot, the neutral, light tones respond to the lightness of the fronds — choose a matte light ceramic decorative pot without pattern so the sculptural silhouette of Ming is the only graphic accent in the arrangement.

Verdeia Tips

  • Never move Polyscias Ming once placed: this is the most important rule with this plant — every disturbance (moving, draft, window change) causes almost immediate leaf drop, as reminded by the most common indoor plant mistakes.
  • Lightly prune in spring to encourage branching: Polyscias Ming tends to grow main stems without naturally branching — pinching terminal shoots above a node encourages lateral branch growth and gradually creates a denser, more sculptural silhouette.
  • Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring with a light, draining substrate: Polyscias is a moderate growth plant with slow root development — wait until roots emerge from the bottom before repotting, following the steps in the tropical plant repotting guide.

Dogs love them
Style: Ball, Size: Medium (Pack of 2)
Our dogs love these. What’s great is that you can add more plastic (like from water bottles) if the plastic starts to fall out from the center. If you have a chewer, though, these won’t last you long. Our shepherd mix loves these and then starts to pull the rubber apart the more she plays with it. Our other dogs treat it normally, though, and those ones last forever. They also get some decent height when bounced, and they make a unique whistling noise when thrown.

Our pup loves the cronch cronch!
Style: Ball, Size: Medium (Pack of 1)
I bought our 15 month old Coton several Chuck-It toys on an Amazon deal. He is incredibly playful, mischievous, and ball/toy obsessed, especially for anything that makes noise. He can also be very destructive so I love how durable most of their products are - they’re among our longest lasting toys and worth every penny. We have yet to take them to the dog park, but they’re a perfect size for sharing in play time. And they are keeping him busy at home - that’s a good thing. He loves investigating the crunchy-cronchy-crinkly sound which is a nice change from squeakers. It can withstand his destructive chewing well-being, gentle on his little teeth. I love that. Chuck-It is thinking outside the box with a variety of balls to keep dogs engaged! I do worry about the crinkle plastic inside because it is accessible because of the air holes and it feels a little sharp. So this will have to be an at home toy so we can monitor his play.

My dog loves it!
Style: Ball, Size: Medium (Pack of 1)
This crunch ball was a Christmas gift for my 65lbs fur baby. It’s now mid April and he still loves it. He loves running after it and chomping down on it. It is still in good shape despite all the chomping it’s gotta . I highly recommend. He goes back to this toy agin and again! Great buy.

Our first babies favorite and longest lasting ball yet and he is fixing to be 7.

Toughest ball we have found yet. Our doberman loves Chuckit! Balls especially the crunch one. He spreads all the balls and toys we have bought but these lasted the longest. The crunch and the glow in the dark are usually his pick but he has several different choices.
